What is NYSSMA?
NYSSMA means New York School Music Association. Its primary objective is for the advancement and strengthening of Music Education in our state.
Each spring NYSSMA holds Evaluation Festivals for music education students. Participants receive a rating and constructive comments from qualified adjudicators. It is important to understand that these evaluations are positive and helpful. It is Not a competition or test. Students cannot "fail" the NYSSMA Evaluation Festivals. It is designed to stimulate practice and motivate better performance and musical ability. Exceptional student musicians are eventually chosen for All-State, All-Country and All-City performing organizations.
Preparing a NYSSMA Solo is an optional and extra task that goes above and beyond the regular expectations of band, orchestra or chorus. Participation requires a substantial commitment of time and effort for additional and consistent home practice.
Although a private teacher is not required for participation in NYSSMA, the most successful students usually study one-on-one with an instructor outside of school. In this setting, personal attention is emphasized and sufficient time is devoted to addressing the specific musical needs of individuals on a regular and routine basis.
All music must be selected from the current NYSSMA Manual-Edition 32, effective July 2018. In addition, the NYSSMA Manual contains important information regarding scale and sight reading regulations and specific requirements for piano and percussion.
